Sep 2026Understanding Vedic Astrology vs Western
Welcome to Humble Mystic. Here is a link to our latest episode on Patreon. Or, if you'd rather read the article, the following is available:A brief overview of the differences between Vedic & Western AstrologyMany of us grew up listening to our horoscopes based on our sun signs. The Western system is based primarily on this, and as you will learn, according to astronomy, you may actually not be that Sun sign at all. Having your chart done by a Vedic astrologer may just change your perception of who you are, and open your mind to seeing yourself quite differently.Western astrology is based on the seasons, and does not take into account the precession of the equinox, a mathematical equation that calculates the wobble of the earth.Vedic astrology does include this calculation, and is more in sync with astronomy and where the constellations are at any given moment from our perspective on Earth. In the Vedic tradition, which has been practiced for thousands of years and is based on the sacred texts of the Vedas, individuals grow up understanding themselves based on a much different system, with a different method of calculating their birth charts and horoscopes.Vedic astrology is part of a larger system of understanding the world that also includes the health system of Ayurveda and the related practice of yoga, both which encompass taking care of ourselves holistically and energetically, including protecting the vitality and health of body mind and spirit. The two systems were more similar around 2,000 years ago, and have been moving apart ever since. Currently there are about 25 degrees of difference in the calculations, meaning that an individual who perceives themselves as for instance, an Aquarius Sun in Western astrology, is actually very likely a Capricorn Sun in Vedic astrology. To be completely accurate, a full natal chart based on an individual’s birth time and location must be created, and is available from our website, humble mystic dot com or elsewhere online. For now, let’s continue discussing the differences in the systems.Western astrology is seasonally based, and is therefore called Western Tropical Astrology. The emphasis is put primarily on the Sun sign, first and foremost.Vedic astrology looks more closely at the individuals rising sign or ascendant, and their moon placement, so it could be said that Vedic astrology is a more lunar based system. This is also how the lunar mansions or nakshatras in Vedic astrology come into play. This unique system helps us understand how a person perceives the world emotionally and their capacity for happiness, optimism and mental strength, among other things. This brings us to another difference, which is that Vedic astrology is concerned with a persons purpose in life, and can help them to understand and navigate the circumstances in their lives in a more meaningful way.Vedic astrology looks at our lives through the lens of Karma and helps us to understand what the Vedas describe as the 4 Aims of life, or Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, relating to our lifes purpose, our career path, our marriage and children and our relationship to the Divine. These concepts help us to better understand our spiritual path and how to best work through challenges and difficulties. We can also learn to understand our innate strengths, abilities and gifts, and align with our spiritual nature to enjoy our lives more.Another difference between Western and Vedic astrology is the dasha system. Unique to Vedic astrology, it can help a person understand what areas of life are prominent for them at a given time, and how they may find greater success in dealing with circumstances that arise. This system is unique to each individual’s chart and must be calculated and explained by a trained Vedic astrologer. The natal or birth chart in Vedic astrology is known as the D1, and is of primary importance when first studying a persons astrological blue print. There are many other divisional charts that an astrologer may consult based on an individuals birth date and time to pinpoint details about important events such as marriage, children or career. One more difference that is unique to Vedic astrology is the consideration of Rahu and Ketu, or the Karmic nodes. These are points in a birth chart used to understand what areas of life we may be passionate about, and what areas of life we may naturally be inclined toward and that feel familiar to us in this lifetime. The idea of Karma, past lifetimes and the concept of purva punya, or past life merit, is also incredibly interesting and unique to Vedic astrology.I want to share this knowledge because it’s changed my life so profoundly. I am grateful to be able to see the gifts and blessings of my life more clearly through Vedic astrology. And I wish for others to experience that as well, to see themselves and their loved ones.more clearly and compassionately. This knowledge is sacred and life changing. Used with wisdom, reverence and expertise, it can lead to deeper connection, peace and clarity for all of our relationships. As someone I love recently said, “We are all shards of magic.” I believe it’s true. This life is a gift, whether it is our only life, or if it is part of our souls journey towards enlightenment and liberation. If you are listening right now, I hope you really feel that, that you are part of something beautiful, mystical and maybe even a little bit magical. You are capable of incredible things. It may take work. It may take time to see yourself through this new perspective, of perhaps being a Taurus Sun instead of a Gemini, or considering the mysteries of life in a new way.I’m sharing this work because it’s changed my life and helped me to become even more grateful for every day. I thank my teachers for their knowledge and wisdom. And I invite you to learn more about your own personal journey through learning your Vedic astrology placements. You can tune in weekly for new content, or book a personal reading with me through our website. In conclusion, when comparing the two systems of astrology, they are, in my opinion, both valid. Yet Vedic can offer a much more complex and refined view of an individual, in ways only briefly described here. One of the most beautiful things about our lives as human beings is our freedom of choice. You get to choose what to believe and how to practice your faith or to not practice at all. I believe that both systems can be helpful when used by an ethical, knowledgable and trustworthy astrologer. I also believe that Vedic astrology offers much more to those seeking to grow in their spiritual wisdom. My path has led me to Vedic astrology, and I find great peace and clarity in understanding myself and the world through the lens of the sacred knowledge and traditions of the Vedas. It is my joy to share it with others, and I hope you find greater understanding of yourself, your loved ones, your purpose and your path through learning more about it here on humble mystic. You can find more about us on patreon at Patreon.com/humblemystic or enjoy new weekly content by returning here to our website.Thank you.
